Welcome!

My name is Debra. I am happy you are here for the launch of my new blog and website Artfully Chosen Words. I am a freelance writer with years of experience in the legal and banking fields, a passion for planning and organizing, and a love for the art and science of homemaking.

My husband and I are empty nesters if you don’t count the chickens in the back yard. We live in a modest home on a two acres, bordered by cow pastures.

I use the term “cow” loosely.

There are cows, and then there are bulls. I never paid much attention to the bull next door. I suppose I knew that he was there, grazing peacefully among the cows and calves. He isn’t much bigger than the cows, so he blends in. Like a nice boy cow.

That all changed last week. I knew something was up when the farmer behind us worked his way around checking ten acres of fence line. The next day, there was a new little herd of brown cows and calves behind us, and one great big black bull.

I guess there isn’t much that disturbs a bull the size of a Volkswagen, because Big Guy in the back is happy to mosey around munching grass. He is minding his own business and his own cows.

On the other hand, Nice Boy Cow next door has transformed into a hoof-stamping Pamplona wanna-be. He is patrolling his territory, including the section of pasture that is closest to our bedroom windows.

I was reading in bed by the light of my Kindle, with a tabby cat sleeping at my feet, when it started. A weird low chuffing kind of grunting noise. The cat and I both sat up, and looked at each other as if to say, “What the …?”

It got louder and faster until Nice Boy Cow cut loose with a full bellow. After more bellowing and stamping, he started over again and moved along, making a circuit next to the fence.

He is definitely overcompensating. This has continued for several days.

Stay tuned to this blog site for my feature article on the advantages of home canned beef.

Until then, I am sending kind thoughts, from my home to yours!
